India's first newspaper⇒
Newspapers start with the entry of Europeans in India. The Portuguese have the credit for bringing the printing press to India. A book was published by some Christian priests in Goa in the year 1557, which was the first book to be printed in India. In 1684 the East India Company established the Printing Press in India. But the credit for extracting India's first newspaper is also attributed to an Englishman named James Ogston Hickey, who published the "Bengal Gazette" in the year 1780.
That is, the history of newspapers in India is 232 years old. "Bengal Gazette" was confiscated for criticizing the company government. The first newspaper to be published in an Indian language was the Monthly Guide, which was published in 1818 AD.
But indisputably India's first major newspaper was "Samvad Kaumudi". The publication of this weekly paper started in 1812 and its manager - editor was eminent social reformer Raja Rammohan Roy. With the publication of "Samvad Kaumudi" the importance of newspapers was first underlined in the Indian Renaissance.
